Customer : URBANLOOP
URBANLOOP SAS is a company developing an innovative concept of intelligent urban mobility, based on research carried out by a group of engineering students at the University of Lorraine. URBANLOOP’s aim is to design, develop and market a new type of end-to-end urban transport system using semi-individual capsules that move rapidly along a network of interconnected loops.
The first trials took place in the NANCY area in 2019. Since then, URBANLOOP has been involved in a number of concrete transport projects supported by various government and local authority bodies, in particular as part of the facilities associated with the 2024 Olympic Games.

Areas of intervention
URBANLOOP wants to develop a new generation of its capsules that responds to new technical issues and is better adapted to the needs of users and local authorities. With this in mind, URBANLOOP asked HAIKU DESIGN to help with its research.
For URBANLOOP, HAIKU DESIGN produced a set of ideas for the development of the U2 capsule, proposing a simple, modular capsule whose architecture makes it possible to vary uses, facilitate industrialisation and limit costs, while complying with regulations. To achieve this, the U2 capsule is divided into 2 distinct sub-assemblies: on the one hand, 2 symmetrical end blocks house the technical and guidance components and, on the other hand, the latter can accommodate a central capsule designed for several uses, one version of which can accommodate up to 6 people, for example, or another version such as a freight transport platform. The central capsule, in the shape of a honeycomb cell, is self-supporting and is made up of simple elements such as sandwich floors and aluminium tubes, large picture windows and standard sliding doors.
