CRISTAL, bimodal transport system

Area of intervention: Overall design: strategy, product, graphics, interactive and space.

An urban transport system designed for public/private use and for a number of different services, cristal is a new way to share mobility by facilitating journeys and optimising the use of a single vehicle, whether in individual (self-service mode) or public (shuttle mode) operation. All-electric, compact and high-capacity to reduce its urban footprint while offering a large interior space, the vehicle offers full PRM access and can accommodate up to 18 persons standing in shuttle mode.

Designed with a "public transport" approach, the cristal system provides a fully complementary service to "mass" public transport (underground, tram, bus) that covers the "last mile". The innovation consists of implementing an integrated public transport service: connected, shared, clean and provided by the same operator as the rest of the existing public transport network. For LOHR, HAIKU DESIGN took part from the creation of the cristal system in the definition, ideation, design studies and experiments concerning the strategy, the concepts, the vehicle, the brand identity, the handover stations, the user interfaces and the on- and off-line communications.

"Building on our group's traditional activities and its successes in the transport sector, cristal is a new step towards the mobility of the future", Robert LOHR - Chairman of the Lohr Group.

cristal was presented in the Saint-Etienne Design Biennial in March 2013. It was officially presented to the public for the first time in the "COP21 Solutions" exhibition at the Grand-Palais, Paris, in December 2015.

cristal and HAIKU DESIGN have received the following awards:

The 2012 Etoile de l’Observeur du design – awarded by APCI - the French Agency for the Promotion of Industrial Creation.

The 2016 Janus de la Prospective – awarded by IFD – the French Design Institute.
